Apple Makes Surprising Move to Rein In AI Spending Moz Farooque ACCA Thu, November 5, 2026 at 9:47 AM EST 2 min read AAPL -0.16% OPAI.PVT ANTH.PVT GOOG -1.06% This article first appeared on GuruFocus . Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL ) is cutting how much some employees can spend on artificial-intelligence tools, adding a fresh twist to the company's broader push to make AI a bigger part of everyday work. Apple lowered the daily AI spending allowance for some engineers to $200 from $300 last month, according to Bloomberg. The company is considering further reductions to as little as $100 per day for some engineering teams. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Sign with MELI. Is AAPL fairly valued? Some non-engineering groups already operate with $100 daily caps, while certain teams could eventually be limited to as little as $25 per day . Employees who need more capacity can seek exemptions from senior executives. The budgets cover the cost of AI tokens consumed through tools including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. Engineers typically have larger allowances because coding and software-development tasks can consume substantial numbers of tokens. The move does not necessarily mean Apple is backing away from AI. Instead, Bloomberg reported that the company is still trying to expand AI usage across engineering and internal operations while simultaneously tightening spending controls. Apple has also encouraged some teams to use cheaper models or shift certain workloads toward on-device AI. That puts Apple at the center of a wider industry shift. Technology companies initially encouraged employees to experiment aggressively with AI coding assistants and other generative tools. Now, as token bills rise, companies are starting to examine whether the productivity improvements justify the expense. Reuters noted that Goldman Sachs has also restricted access to some AI coding tools following reviews of productivity and risk. I think the bigger story is that AI spending is starting to face the same return-on-investment discipline as every other corporate expense . Cutting an engineer's daily limit from $300 to $200 does not meaningfully change Apple's balance sheet by itself. Companies spent much of the AI boom rewarding experimentation and usage. Now they increasingly want evidence that every additional token is actually improving productivity. For Apple, that could ultimately be positive if it encourages more efficient model selection, greater use of on-device processing and tighter control over third-party AI costs. The risk is that aggressive cost limits slow employee experimentation at a time when Apple is still trying to catch up in AI. For investors, the key things to watch are internal AI adoption, spending discipline, on-device model usage, developer productivity and whether Apple can expand AI capabilities without letting operating costs rise uncontrollably . It is starting to ask what the AI is actually worth.
