Has Nuclear Energy Trade Seen Its Bottom? What Jan Van Eck Sees In The Constellation-Google Deal

Yahoo Finance ·

VanEck Funds CEO Jan van Eck stated that the nuclear energy market may have reached its lowest point following the landmark agreement between Constellation Energy and Alphabet's Google. Speaking with CNBC, he noted that the sector recently faced severe headwinds, largely driven by political anxieties surrounding data centers. Under the terms of the 20-year accord, Google and Constellation Energy committed $4.3 billion in fresh capital to integrate 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity into the PJM grid. Following this announcement, nuclear equities rallied sharply on Tuesday. Constellation shares surged over 12%, Vistra Corp gained nearly 11%, Talen Energy jumped more than 12%, Oklo rose over 7%, NuScale Power climbed above 4%, and NANO Nuclear Energy advanced more than 6%. Furthermore, the VanEck Uranium Nuclear ETF moved up approximately 5.5%. Van Eck believes that market fears for AI infrastructure are now fully priced in, signaling that the prolonged slump for the AI 2.0 ecosystem could soon conclude as regulatory approvals for power plants materialize.

The contract between Google and Constellation Energy sparked a simultaneous surge in nuclear stocks such as CEG up 12%, VST up 11%, and TLN up 12%, providing a turning point for the AI 2.0 ecosystem. As nuclear power emerges as the only alternative to meet the massive power demands of data centers, expectations for earnings improvements among related infrastructure companies have grown.

Key indicators going forward include the approval of additional nuclear permits and the progress of power grid (PJM) integration. In a bullish scenario, the resolution of AI power bottlenecks would lead to a long-term rally in the nuclear sector, but regulatory delays could increase volatility.
