Microsoft Withdraws from Nscale UK Data Center Amid Power Grid Constraints
Yahoo Finance ·
Microsoft has exited a planned artificial intelligence data center in Loughton, Essex, being developed by British cloud firm Nscale, according to reports on October 18. The decision followed notifications from grid officials that electricity supply would likely be delayed until the 2030s. The site was initially slated to host approximately 23,000 Nvidia chips for Azure, representing about 11.5 percent of Nscale's multi-region supply agreement with Microsoft. Despite this setback, Microsoft's overall infrastructure spending remains aggressive, with cash capital expenditure reaching $35.80 billion in the June quarter, more than double from the previous year. Intelligent Cloud revenue also surged about 32 percent to $39.31 billion, while CFO Amy Hood noted that customer demand continues to outpace supply. Facing severe grid bottlenecks, Microsoft is actively securing alternative power solutions, including a recent twenty-year agreement with NiSource in Indiana for roughly 1,100 megawatts and exploring on-site fuel cells with Bloom Energy. Analysts view the move as a localized grid capacity issue rather than a slowdown in Microsoft's broader artificial intelligence expansion.
AI 시장 분석
Microsoft (MSFT) has withdrawn from the Nscale AI data center project in Lowton, UK, due to power grid supply delays. This withdrawal shows that the core bottleneck of AI infrastructure expansion is power scarcity rather than funding or demand. However, MS continues investments in regions where power is securable, such as a 20-year contract with NiSource in Indiana.
상승 영향
- AI — Overwhelming investment demand for AI infrastructure continues, with Microsoft's cash capital expenditures more than doubling year-over-year and intelligent cloud revenue surging by 32%.
하락 영향
- Utilities — As UK power grid supplies are expected to be available only in the 2030s, infrastructure construction delays are directly disrupting cloud and data center expansion plans.
DYAX 전담 분석
The suspension of data center projects due to power grid connection delays highlights the physical limits of cloud and AI infrastructure building, potentially causing short-term disruptions in related supply and demand. While this is a major blow to small and mid-sized partners like Nscale, it acts as a windfall for companies providing self-contained power solutions.
Going forward, investors should monitor MS's quarterly capital expenditure (Capex) scale and power infrastructure securing contracts as core indicators. If grid constraints are prolonged, benefit scenarios for on-site power generation and fuel cell-related companies are expected to strengthen further.
