TSMC 2nm Wafer Capacity Expected to Surpass Prior Projections, EDN Reports

Yahoo Finance ·

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co is speeding up the expansion of its advanced 2-nanometre fabrication capacity as robust demand from artificial intelligence and high-performance computing sectors drives a surge in purchase orders, according to local publication EDN. Citing industry insiders, the report indicated that TSMC's monthly output for 2nm wafers could climb to approximately 120,000 units by the conclusion of 2026, surpassing previous forecasts of 90,000 to 100,000 wafers. Major clients such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, and MediaTek have recently boosted their orders for the 2nm family nodes by 10 percent to 20 percent. The foundry is launching five 2nm production facilities this year, encompassing two sites in Hsinchu and three in Kaohsiung, noted Hou Yung-ching, a senior vice president at TSMC. Furthermore, initial year output for 2nm is projected to exceed the first-year volume of 3nm in 2023 by 45 percent, with capacity anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 70 percent between 2026 and 2028.

Taiwan's TSMC is expanding its 2-nanometer (nm) wafer production capacity ahead of schedule, driven by strong order increases from AI and high-performance computing customers. Monthly production by the end of 2026 is projected to reach 120,000 wafers, exceeding the previous estimate of 90,000 to 100,000. Orders from major clients such as Apple, Nvidia, and AMD have increased by 10-20%, raising expectations for growth across the semiconductor ecosystem. Investors should pay attention to the potential performance improvements of leading advanced process companies and major fabless firms.

DYAX 전담 분석

TSMC's expansion of 2nm process capacity directly reflects the surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), with monthly production of 120,000 wafers by the end of 2026 and an average annual growth of 70% from 2026 to 2028 expected. This is the result of a 10-20% increase in orders from major customers such as Nvidia, AMD, and Apple, which will accelerate revenue and profit growth for related semiconductor companies.

The bullish scenario is that the initial 2nm yield stabilizes 45% faster than 3nm, leading to a surge in fabless and foundry earnings, while the bearish scenario is a slowdown in IT device demand due to macroeconomic deterioration and a sharp increase in capital expenditure. Key indicators to watch are the monthly wafer shipment growth rate and the new product sales performance of major customers.
