Google Unveils $15 Billion Data Centre Investment in Malaysia
Yahoo Finance ·
Alphabet Inc.'s Google announced on Wednesday that it will pour $15 billion into Malaysia over the next two years to construct advanced data centres and related infrastructure, addressing surging global demand for artificial intelligence capabilities. The capital injection, scheduled for 2027 through 2028, builds upon a previous $2 billion commitment made in 2024. Malaysia currently stands as Southeast Asia's fastest-growing hub for server facilities, capturing over half of the region's under-construction capacity. To mitigate environmental concerns regarding soaring electricity and water consumption, Google promised energy-efficient campuses, the addition of over one gigawatt of clean energy capacity, and enhanced local water security. The tech giant also estimated the operational hubs will support more than 9,000 local jobs annually with wages surpassing the national median by 45 percent. While the International Monetary Fund projects Malaysia's economy to expand by 5.2 percent in 2026, officials remain watchful as data centres are projected to consume one-third of the nation's total energy by 2035.
