Three Nuclear Stocks Plummet From Peaks: Is There a Buy?

Yahoo Finance ·

The global nuclear sector experienced a prolonged slump following the 2011 Fukushima accident as nations scaled back atomic energy programs. However, momentum recently revived due to decarbonization mandates and surging electricity demands from cloud computing and AI expansion. According to the International Energy Agency, worldwide nuclear capacity could surge over 50 percent by 2050. This outlook propelled several prominent equities to record highs over the past year. Yet, macroeconomic headwinds including inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical tensions have triggered severe corrections. NuScale and Oklo have plummeted 86 percent and 79 percent from their all-time highs, respectively, while BWX Technologies has retreated roughly 40 percent. Both NuScale and Oklo specialize in factory-built small modular reactors designed to reduce construction expenses and timelines. NuScale's SMRs generate 77 MWe with a 21-month refueling cycle, whereas Oklo's Aurora microreactors produce 1.5 MWe and can operate for about a decade without refueling by reprocessing fuel pellets.

Recently, nuclear energy-related stocks have experienced a correction, plunging over 40% from their peaks. The main driver of the stock decline is dampened investment sentiment caused by the Iran war, inflation, and rate hikes. However, according to the IEA, global nuclear capacity is projected to increase by over 50% by 2050, and the surge in power demand from the AI market supports long-term growth.
