Microchip Broadens Product Line to Outpace Rivals AMD and Lattice

Yahoo Finance ·

Microchip Technology is scaling its product lineup to capture high-growth markets such as edge AI, data centers, aerospace, and defense, bolstering its position against Advanced Micro Devices and Lattice Semiconductor. By combining microcontrollers, analog devices, and FPGAs into comprehensive system solutions, Microchip aims to capture a larger share of customer silicon requirements. The firm recently launched Revision 2.0 of its PolarFire FPGA Ethernet Sensor Bridge, which is 60 percent smaller, supports twice the cameras, and targets NVIDIA-powered edge AI systems. Additionally, the new Space CSAC-SA65 chip-scale atomic clock targets the LEO satellite sector. Aerospace and defense revenues surged 45.6 percent year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. Meanwhile, total data center revenues are projected to expand from roughly $591 million in 2025 to about $1 billion in calendar 2026, driven by new PCIe Gen6 switches and storage controllers. Competitors like Lattice and AMD continue to advance in embedded AI and low-power FPGAs, with Lattice reporting a 36 percent increase in industrial and embedded sales, and AMD posting $977 million in embedded revenues.

MCHP's launch of PolarFire FPGAs and new data center products is driving financial growth by increasing the average selling price per chip and encouraging bundled sales. In particular, the rapid surge in defense and data center revenues is directly contributing to margin improvements.

While expanding market share driven by future demand for AI and edge computing serves as a bullish factor for the stock, intensified competition with AMD and LSCC and macroeconomic slowdowns remain risk factors. Key monitoring indicators include the data center segment's revenue achievement rate and order backlogs relative to competitors.
