Marvell Raised Its Outlook but Fell as Google Chip Revenue Stayed Distant. Has the AI Payoff Been Priced In? (Ready for review) Habib Ur Rehman Fri, September 4, 2026 at 6:58 PM EDT 3 min read MRVL GOOG Marvell raised its annual forecasts on August 27, yet its shares fell as investors focused on the timing of revenue from a custom AI-chip relationship with Google. Management said material Google revenue was not expected until fiscal 2029, even though its outlook already included some contribution and the longer opportunity could be substantial. Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL ) supplies the silicon promise; Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) controls the deployment pace. Marvell's bull case is that custom accelerators and networking can diversify hyperscalers away from standard GPUs. A Google program validates its engineering and may bring non-recurring design revenue before volume production. Multiple successful designs could compound because the company also sells interconnect and optical products around AI clusters. Insider Monkey counted 96 hedge funds holding MRVL at June 30, up from 79 at March 31. D. E. Shaw reported 2,504,623 common shares after increasing its position by 658%. The stock reaction exposed the problem. Reports noted that shares had nearly tripled in 2026 and traded around 58 times forward earnings before the selloff. Revenue expected in fiscal 2029 carries design, manufacturing, schedule, and customer-concentration risk. A warrant allowing Google to buy up to 58.97 million shares also creates potential dilution. Forecast increases do not eliminate the gap between today's valuation and later production. Alphabet benefits from negotiating leverage and chip choice. Internal accelerators can lower unit costs, optimize models, and keep NVIDIA from becoming the only supplier. Hedge-fund breadth rose to 275 funds holding Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) in Q2 from 265 in Q1. Berkshire Hathaway's 78,791,167-share disclosure was 46% larger than in the prior quarter. Alphabet's risk is execution: custom chips must deliver performance, software compatibility, and supply at scale. Shifting volume to Marvell does not guarantee lower total costs if designs slip or models change. The August 14 settlement showed 28.39 million MRVL shares sold short, about 3.26% of float, with 1.42 days to cover. That snapshot came before earnings and was not heavily crowded. Marvell's opportunity is real, but the selloff says timing now matters as much as size. Investors need design milestones, firm production schedules, and margin evidence before capitalizing distant Google revenue as though it were already shipping. They should also track whether Google exercises the Marvell warrant. Exercise would strengthen alignment, but the resulting dilution and implied economics still need to be weighed against realized chip revenue. Cash conversion will matter too. While we acknowledge the potential of MRVL as an investment, we believe certain other AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
