Crusoe Offloads Troubled Wyoming Data Center Initiative to Google
Yahoo Finance ·
Denver-based data center developer Crusoe, recently valued at $30.9 billion, confirmed on Friday that it has transferred its unfinished data center site in southeastern Wyoming to Google. Originally launched last year alongside Blackstone-backed infrastructure firm Tallgrass, the venture faced scrutiny over construction timelines and expenses under Crusoe's oversight. Google, which previously declined to join as a customer, is now stepping in and plans to inject $17 billion into developing the campus. While this setback underscores the hurdles independent developers face with massive builds, Crusoe maintains its relationship with tech giants, continuing a separate project for Google near Amarillo, Texas. Furthermore, Crusoe successfully secured a $3.9 billion funding round in September, alongside major ongoing partnerships with Oracle, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta.

Data center developer Crusoe sold its unfinished Wyoming data center project, which had been suffering from financial distress and construction delays, to Google. Google plans to invest $1.7 billion on the site to build a large-scale data center campus. This transaction highlights how difficult it is for independent developers to handle massive power and equipment demands, suggesting a trend toward big tech companies internalizing their infrastructure.

- Data Center Development — Structural risks have been highlighted that independent data center developers find it difficult to complete large projects on time due to massive costs and power procurement challenges.
DYAX 전담 분석
Google's acquisition of this Wyoming project is a strategic choice to stably secure the soaring demand for AI computing infrastructure. Although Crusoe handed over the project due to construction delays and cost pressures, it still maintains its importance within the AI infrastructure ecosystem as it continues to build large data centers for big tech companies such as Oracle, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta in places like Texas.
Going forward, the pace of stabilization in the AI data center supply chain and power supply conditions will be key variables for stock prices and earnings. If the construction delay risks of independent developers are highlighted, fundraising for related startups could hit a snag, but the expansion of direct investments by big tech is expected to act as a positive momentum for the cloud and infrastructure sectors.
