Meta Halves External AI Tool Usage, Delivering a Major Blow to Anthropic

Yahoo Finance ·

Meta Platforms has reduced the number of in-house developers utilizing Anthropic's Claude Code by half, dropping from approximately 60,000 earlier this year to around 30,000. The tech giant is transitioning its engineering staff to proprietary coding solutions such as MetaCode and Muse Code, while Microsoft has also reportedly trimmed its internal Claude expenditures. This shift poses a severe challenge for Anthropic, which relies heavily on a concentrated base of major corporate clients. Although Meta's annual spending on Claude Code reached roughly $1.4 billion, the savings are minimal compared to Meta's massive capital expenditure of $69.7 billion projected for 2025. Anthropic recently posted a third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion, but top-line growth is slowing, with Bloomberg Intelligence analysts pointing to Meta's advanced in-house models as a contributing factor. As leading technology firms develop their own frontier systems like Meta's Muse Wonder, the heavy reliance on a few dominant customers highlights a vulnerable spot for Anthropic's future expansion.

Anthropic is taking a hit as Meta cuts the external AI tool usage of its internal developers in half and transitions to its own coding tools. Meta was a major customer spending over $1 billion annually, but is showing signs of defection through in-house model development. This highlights the structural risks for AI companies heavily reliant on a small number of large customers.
