Why IonQ (IONQ) Stock Is Trading Up Today Kayode Omotosho Wed, September 23, 2026 at 1:17 PM EDT 2 min read IONQ NVDA What Happened? Shares of quantum computing company IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) jumped 4.8% in the morning session after the company announced an end-to-end real-time quantum error correction decoder that runs on a single standard central processing unit. The technology eliminates classical decoding delays that previously caused quantum hardware to pause during operations. IonQ verified the decoder across circuits simulating up to 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5 million quantum operations. In addition, IonQ announced that its Superion 256 quantum computer will serve as the first on-premise quantum deployment at NVIDIA's Accelerated Quantum Research Center, linking directly to an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system via NVIDIA NVQLink. The shares were trading at $42.79, up 4.9% from the previous close. Is now the time to buy IonQ? Access our full analysis report here, it's free . IonQ's shares are extremely volatile and have had 85 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 6 days ago when the stock gained 10.1% on the news that the company announced joint research with Synopsys showing that quantum algorithms accelerated industrial design simulations by up to 14.6%. According to a company press release, the work embedded an advanced quantum algorithm into Synopsys's Ansys LS-DYNA simulation software to reorganize equations more efficiently and cut calculation time for complex automotive and jet-engine simulations. IonQ said the approach helps relieve computational bottlenecks that slow classical supercomputers, and the joint paper earned a first-place Best Paper Award at IEEE Quantum Week 2026. Evidence that quantum tools can speed real engineering workflows tends to support the commercial case for the technology — and can draw buying interest into pure-play quantum names. IonQ is down 8.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $42.79 per share, it is trading 47.9% below its 52-week high of $82.09 from October 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of IonQ's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $4,275. WHILE YOU'RE HERE: The Next Palantir?
