Why Are Tesla (TSLA) Shares Soaring Today Anthony Lee Thu, September 3, 2026 at 9:43 PM EDT 3 min read TSLA What Happened? Shares of electric vehicle pioneer Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) jumped 6.7% in the afternoon session after sentiment improved ahead of a highly anticipated post-market launch event at Gigafactory Texas, where the automaker plans to host the first public riders for its steering-wheel-free Cybercab robotaxi. Tesla teased the invitation-only event in Austin, Texas, on X with "no steering wheel, no pedals" for the purpose-built two-seater, CNBC reported. CEO Elon Musk pointed to the Cybercab's cost advantage over Waymo, noting on X that a camera-only autonomous system is cheaper to mass-produce than sensor-laden alternatives, according to The Verge. Texas Department of Motor Vehicles records showed Tesla had 45 Cybercabs registered for driverless operations in the state. Is now the time to buy Tesla? In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 3 days ago when the stock gained 4.9% on the news that investors continued to focus on the long-term potential of the company's autonomous driving technology. According to Barron's, Tesla's stock price remains closely tied to its efforts to tap into the massive self-driving market and secure regulatory approvals for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. While recent updates to the FSD system have shown improvements in smoothness and decision-making, beta testers have highlighted persistent weaknesses, particularly the system's inability to effectively detect and navigate around potholes and road debris. However, investors appear willing to look past these near-term technical speed bumps, betting instead that the company will eventually refine its camera-only approach and successfully launch its highly anticipated robotaxi network. Adding to the optimism, Musk said (in a weekend post on X, formerly Twitter) that SpaceX and Tesla are "each building 100 gigawatts per year of solar production capacity. While the market often trades Tesla on automotive deliveries and autonomous driving timelines, the solar push could position the company as a direct play on the artificial intelligence infrastructure build-out. Tesla is down 13.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $378.80 per share, it is trading 22.7% below its 52-week high of $489.88 from December 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Tesla's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,549. WHILE YOU'RE HERE: The Next Palantir?
