The company plans to expand the autonomous service to more vehicles and locations over time. NHTSA noted that the Cybercab does not have conventional driver controls, including a steering wheel, brake pedal or accelerator. Texas records showed 420 autonomous Tesla vehicles registered as of Friday, including 45 Cybercabs. The agency has authority to permit up to 2,500 vehicles per manufacturer each year without traditional controls. NHTSA previously cleared Amazon's Zoox for limited commercial robotaxi operations. The probe adds regulatory uncertainty around Tesla's autonomous-vehicle rollout and pressured shares lower.
