The company announced the expanded authorization Monday, giving Nvidia considerably more capacity to buy back shares as its artificial intelligence business continues to generate substantial cash. Investors responded positively to the announcement, with Nvidia shares rising about 1.2% in premarket trading. The size of the authorization is notable even by megacap technology standards. It also highlights the amount of financial flexibility Nvidia has accumulated during the AI infrastructure boom. Buybacks can reduce the number of shares outstanding over time and increase the portion of the company represented by each remaining share, although an authorization does not mean Nvidia will immediately spend the entire $150 billion. The capital-return decision comes as Nvidia continues investing heavily across the AI ecosystem and competing with chipmakers including Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel (INTC). That leaves investors watching two major uses of Nvidia's growing financial resources at once: funding the next phase of its AI expansion while returning additional capital through repurchases. The next catalyst will be the pace at which Nvidia actually uses the expanded authorization and how much cash the company continues generating as AI infrastructure spending develops.
