Advanced Micro Devices vs. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing: The AI Sell-Off Is Exposing a Critical Difference Investors Shouldn't Ignore for 2027

Yahoo Finance ·

The artificial intelligence (AI) boom has propelled semiconductor stocks to new heights, but recent selling pressure has raised questions about elevated valuations and the sustainability of massive AI infrastructure spending. For investors looking toward 2027, the pullback presents an opportunity to reassess two of the industry's leading players: Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD -15.38% ) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM -9.62% ) . While AMD competes to capture a larger share of the AI chip market with its advanced processors and GPUs, TSMC manufactures the cutting-edge chips that power much of the industry. Both stand to benefit from continued AI investment, but their distinct business models, financial strength, and valuations could lead to very different outcomes as the market becomes increasingly selective. AMD designs high-performance processors and graphics chips used in data centers, personal computers, gaming systems, and embedded applications. The company has emerged as a leading challenger to Nvidia ( NVDA -8.70% ) in the AI accelerator market, supported by growing demand for its EPYC server processors and Instinct GPUs. Its multiyear partnership with OpenAI represents a significant opportunity to expand its presence in AI infrastructure, although competition remains intense. AMD's financial performance reflects this momentum. In fiscal 2025, revenue climbed 34% to $34.6 billion, while net income reached $4.3 billion, representing a profit margin of approximately 12.5%. Data center revenue grew 32% to $16.6 billion, driven by strong demand for server processors and AI accelerators. At the end of 2025, its debt-to-equity ratio stood at approximately 0.1x, with a current ratio of 2.9x, providing considerable financial flexibility. AMD generated $5.5 billion in free cash flow during the year, more than doubling its 2024 total. However, stock-based compensation of approximately $1.6 billion represented a meaningful portion of operating cash flow, introducing potential shareholder dilution. TSMC is the world's leading contract chip manufacturer. Unlike chip designers who compete for market share, TSMC benefits from manufacturing the processors that power much of the AI industry. In 2025, the company produced more than 12,600 products for 534 customers, providing broad exposure to demand across AI infrastructure, smartphones, and automotive markets.
