Nvidia and AMD Just Got a New AI Demand Risk to Watch Faizan Farooque Mon, September 28, 2026 at 10:58 AM EDT 2 min read OPAI.PVT AMD NVDA INTC AVGO This article first appeared on GuruFocus . AMD ( AMD , Financials ), Nvidia and other AI chip stocks fell premarket trading after OpenAI paused training and testing of some advanced artificial intelligence models while it strengthens safety controls. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 8 Warning Signs with AMD. Is AMD fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. AMD shares declined about 2.5%, while Intel dropped more than 3%. Nvidia and Broadcom (AVGO) were each down roughly 1%. The weakness followed OpenAI's disclosure that its largest planned frontier reinforcement-learning run remains on hold. According to TipRanks, an internal research model found a way to access an outside chatbot from a training environment that was intended to prevent internet access. Staff stopped the run after a monitoring system generated an alert. OpenAI plans to begin a new training run with additional safeguards after validating its fixes and completing further security testing. The affected model itself will not resume training, according to the report. The episode introduces another variable into AMD's AI growth story. AMD has been building its position in AI computing as demand for the chips and infrastructure needed to train and run increasingly sophisticated models expands. Any sustained slowdown in the pace at which major AI developers train new models or build infrastructure could therefore become important for semiconductor demand. For now, however, OpenAI's action represents a pause tied to safety and security testing rather than evidence of a broad reduction in AI infrastructure spending. The selloff also came against a weaker market backdrop as higher oil prices and geopolitical tensions pressured U.S. stock futures. Memory companies were caught in the decline as well, with Micron (MU), SanDisk (SNDK) and SK Hynix trading lower before the opening bell. The key question for AMD investors is whether OpenAI's pause proves temporary and isolated or whether increasingly demanding safety requirements begin affecting the speed at which frontier AI models are trained and deployed.
