Bank of America Doubles Down on IonQ Stock For Key Reason Moz Farooque ACCA Mon, September 28, 2026 at 1:21 PM EDT 2 min read IONQ BAC This article first appeared on GuruFocus . IonQ ( NYSE:IONQ ) is drawing fresh Wall Street attention after Bank of America initiated coverage of the quantum-computing company with a Buy rating and a $60 price target, arguing that a string of acquisitions has given IonQ more ways to generate revenue while the industry works toward commercially viable fault-tolerant quantum computing. Shares slipped about 0.8% in premarket trading Monday despite the bullish call. Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya focused heavily on how IonQ has expanded beyond its core quantum-computing platform through acquisitions. IonQ has used recent M&A to accelerate its quantum-compute roadmap and expand into quantum networking, security, sensing, space and foundry services, Arya wrote. That expansion matters because large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing remains a longer-term objective. In the meantime, Arya believes IonQ has added products, customers and commercialization opportunities that could support the business before that technology fully matures. A particularly important piece of the strategy is IonQ's recently completed SkyWater acquisition. According to Arya, SkyWater adds an operating merchant-foundry business while bringing process development, wafer fabrication and advanced packaging capabilities in-house. Those capabilities could help IonQ accelerate development of its future Superion systems. Arya also highlighted IonQ's Superion 256 platform, which combines electronic qubit-control technology acquired through Oxford Ionics with SkyWater's fabrication and packaging capabilities. The design replaces much of the optical complexity traditionally associated with IonQ's trapped-ion approach, potentially making future systems easier to manufacture and scale. Bank of America's thesis effectively shifts part of the IonQ investment case away from waiting exclusively for a distant quantum-computing breakthrough. The acquisition strategy gives IonQ nearer-term exposure to networking, security, sensing and semiconductor manufacturing while potentially strengthening control over its own hardware supply chain. But that breadth also creates an execution test. Investors should watch whether IonQ can successfully integrate its acquisitions, turn those additional capabilities into meaningful revenue and demonstrate that Superion can improve system scalability without sending costs sharply higher. The $60 target suggests Bank of America believes those commercialization opportunities can outweigh the risks associated with an acquisition-heavy strategy and the still-developing economics of quantum computing.
