Yahoo Finance's Brooke DiPalma explains what we know so far. Breaking news, Apple is suing OpenAI and its hardware chief for trade secret theft. The tech giant alleging that the AI startup sold confidential information from current and former Apple employees. The lawsuit claims that former senior electrical engineer at Apple, Chang Liu, kept a work-issued Apple laptop and discovered a bug that allowed him to access Apple's cloud file storage after leaving and while employed by OpenAI. Now, Apple also claims that Liu allegedly celebrated this finding in a message to a former colleague who was still employed at Apple. Apple saying in a statement, quote, recently, significant evidence has emerged suggesting individuals employed by OpenAI wrongfully took Apple's secret and confidential information regarding our unreleased technologies, processes and products. Keep in mind though guys, Apple has lost a lot of talent to OpenAI in about the past year, including Tang Tan, an Apple veteran who worked on the iPhone and the Apple Watch. And well, they now serve as OpenAI's chief hardware officer, who is also mentioned in the complaint, as well as Johnny Ive, Apple's former chief design officer who began collaborating with OpenAI back in 2023. Apple and OpenAI currently have a partnership to integrate chat GPT into Apple products.
