NHTSA Closes Second Tesla Probe in a Week as Incident Reports Collapse Renato Neves, CFA Thu, July 2, 2026 at 11:12 AM EDT 1 min read TSLA This article first appeared on GuruFocus . Tesla ( NASDAQ:TSLA ) rose 0.48% in premarket after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closed its 2022 preliminary evaluation into 695,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over unexpected deceleration, citing a low demonstrated hazard and a steep decline in reported incidents. When the probe opened four years ago, there were 300 incident reports. That fell to 45 in 2024, 19 in 2025, and just three since the start of 2026. NHTSA said the reported conditions did not alter lane positioning or reduce following distance enough to cause a collision risk. Tesla had released software updates in early 2022 targeting the deceleration behavior. The closure marks the second NHTSA probe shut in seven days as last week the agency closed a separate expanded investigation into 376,241 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over loss of steering control. The back-to-back closures strip away two regulatory overhangs that had been open for years. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 8 Warning Signs with TSLA. Is TSLA fairly valued?
