Why Broadcom Stock Crashed Today

Yahoo Finance ·

Shares of Broadcom ( AVGO -4.21% ) turned lower on Wednesday, falling as much as 5.9%. As of 11:49 a.m. ET, the stock was still down 4.4%. The catalyst that sent the semiconductor specialist lower was news that Marvell Technology ( MRVL +9.63% ) had struck a major deal with Broadcom's largest customer. In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, Marvell revealed it had struck an important deal with Google-parent Alphabet ( GOOGL +0.48% ) ( GOOG +0.19% ) . As part of the agreement, Marvell will help the search giant develop custom semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) , as well as a vast array of supporting accessories, including "AI inference accelerators, storage controllers, network interface controllers, memory interface controllers, and near-memory compute." Perhaps more importantly, Marvell issued a warrant to Google, allowing it to purchase up to 58,970,907 shares of its common stock at $206.58 per share, according to the filing. The first 1.36 million warrant shares will vest in equal quarterly installments during the first year. The remainder will vest between its fiscal 2027 and 2033 in 240 equal tranches, one for each $500 million in custom products purchased.

Broadcom (AVGO) shares weakened in Wednesday's trading, falling up to 5.9%. This decline was driven by competitor Marvell Technology (MRVL) signing a joint development agreement for AI custom semiconductors with Google (Alphabet), Broadcom's largest customer. This contract heightened concerns over the cannibalization of Broadcom's core revenue streams, triggering heavy selling by investors.

DYAX 전담 분석

Marvell Technology is threatening Broadcom's monopolistic position in the AI infrastructure market through a large-scale partnership with Google. In particular, the 5.89 million share warrants provided by Marvell to Google strengthen the ties between the two companies, which will likely deepen the hit to Broadcom's financial performance.

The bullish scenario is that Broadcom defends against the blow through its diversified portfolio with existing clients, while the bearish scenario is that the loss of Google volume spreads to other Big Tech customers. Key metrics to watch include Marvell's future custom semiconductor supply performance and Broadcom's quarterly revenue growth rate.
