UPS Prepares for Peak Season Amid Amazon Volume Cuts
Yahoo Finance ·
Package delivery giant UPS is heading into its first peak holiday season following a 50% reduction in its Amazon shipping volume. During a Q3 earnings call, executives shared that U.S. average daily volume is projected to dip slightly year over year in Q4. However, revenue is still expected to grow 3% compared to the same period last year, driven by higher per-package yields and expansion in lucrative sectors. CEO Carol Tomé noted that Q4 volume will jump roughly 25% from Q3, matching previous peak trends. Small- and medium-sized businesses accounted for 35.1% of domestic volume in Q3, up about 240 basis points, while healthcare revenue surpassed $3 billion for the third straight quarter. CFO Brian Dykes explained that lower overall volume will ease operational pressures by requiring fewer leased trailers, fewer aircraft leases, and reduced seasonal hiring intensity. Meanwhile, UPS continues to innovate with automated network upgrades and the upcoming launch of Protected Delivery.

As UPS reduces Amazon volume by half, its Q4 average daily volume in the US is expected to decline year-over-year. However, Q4 revenue is projected to grow by 3% driven by the acquisition of high-margin customer segments such as small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and healthcare. Q3 revenue per piece increased by 6.1%, supported by an improved customer mix and higher base rates. This strategic shift is expected to enhance operational efficiency and drive profitability-focused growth.
상승 영향
- Logistics — UPS is reducing low-margin Amazon volume while expanding high-margin customer segments like SMBs and healthcare, leading to a projected 3% year-over-year revenue increase in Q4 and improved profitability per piece.
하락 영향
- E-commerce — UPS's strategic volume reduction could cause temporary disruptions and cost pressures in the delivery network operations of major e-commerce companies, including Amazon.
DYAX 전담 분석
Instead of low-margin Amazon volume, UPS is expanding high-margin sectors like SMBs and healthcare, thereby increasing profitability per piece despite volume declines. The effectiveness of this profitability improvement was proven as the Q3 SMB share rose by 240 basis points and healthcare revenue exceeded $3 billion for the third consecutive quarter.
Going forward, investors should focus on the sustained growth of high-margin customer segments and the operational cost reduction effects (such as lower lease and labor costs) resulting from volume declines. If the growth of high-margin customers stagnates or the volume drop is larger than expected, it could pose a burden on financial performance.
