Can ExxonMobil Benefit From the Current Energy Market Tightness? Zacks Equity Research Fri, September 4, 2026 at 9:46 AM EDT 3 min read CL=F XOM PARR VLO ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation XOM, a U.S. oil and gas giant, has an integrated business model spanning upstream operations, refining and trading. The current strength in oil prices is expected to support the company's profitability in the upstream segment. Oil prices have climbed sharply this week amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including fresh U.S. strikes on Iran. The West Texas Intermediate is trading close to $90 per barrel, while Brent is around $94 per barrel, according to data from oilprice.com. ExxonMobil's focus on growing production from its advantaged assets in Guyana and the Permian Basin is expected to aid the energy giant's profits, especially in a favorable oil price environment. The company expects its Permian production to reach 2.5 million oil equivalent barrels per day (Moebd) by the end of this decade, while total production is anticipated to reach 5.5 Moebd. In Guyana, ExxonMobil's fifth FPSO is on track for startup by year-end, while a final investment decision on the Longtail development is expected soon. In addition, its refining business is poised to benefit from the current volatility in energy markets. While shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz had already tightened product inventories, the recent attacks on Russian refineries have further constrained refining capacity. The outlook for XOM's Energy Products segment remains positive as lower product inventories and constrained refining capacity continue to support refining margins. This creates a potentially favorable setup across ExxonMobil's integrated portfolio in the near term. While sustained higher oil prices would primarily benefit its upstream business, supply disruptions and limited refining capacity could provide additional support to downstream margins. However, management warned that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for a full quarter could significantly affect its Middle East production levels. Par Pacific Holdings PARR operates an integrated downstream network spanning refining, logistics, retail and renewable fuels. The integrated platform covers the entire process, from sourcing crude to converting it into refined fuels and distributing the products through its retail and logistics channels. The downstream energy firm has a combined refining capacity of 219,000 barrels per day across Hawaii, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. This integrated setup provides the company with the operational flexibility to capitalize on favorable refining market conditions. Valero Energy VLO is among the largest independent refiners in the United States, with a combined high-complexity throughput capacity of nearly 3 million barrels per day across its refineries. Its refining footprint is heavily concentrated along the U.S. Gulf Coast and the Midcontinent, offering feedstock sourcing flexibility. Moreover, its Gulf Coast access enables it to sell its refined products in high-demand markets and benefit from elevated refining margins and strong international demand for refined products. XOM's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates Shares of XOM have gained 52.8% over the past year compared with the industry's growth of 50.3%. From a valuation standpoint, XOM trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) of 9.06X. This is above the broader industry average of 5.79X. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for XOM's 2026 earnings hasn't seen any revisions over the past seven days. ExxonMobil currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
